In 2022, I had to walk away from my career as a vascular surgeon.
An autoimmune rheumatologic condition made the physical demands of operating impossible. And as I moved to the patient side of the system — the denials, the delays, the phone calls, the hold music — I realized something: even with 20 years of medical training, navigating healthcare as a patient was overwhelming.
