"You shouldn't have to be a medical professional to get good medical care."

Everything I write and every session I offer has one focus: you. Not the insurance company, not the hospital, not the healthcare system. Just you — with the knowledge and confidence to navigate whatever comes next.

- Dr. Ash -

In 2022, I had to walk away from my career as a vascular surgeon.

An autoimmune rheumatologic condition made the physical demands of operating impossible. And as I moved to the patient side of the system — the denials, the delays, the phone calls, the hold music — I realized something: even with 20 years of medical training, navigating healthcare as a patient was overwhelming.

If it was hard for me, I kept thinking, what is it like for everyone else?

From the Sidelines is my answer to that question.

From the Sidelines

In most games, reading the other team's playbook is cheating. In healthcare, it's called being prepared.

From the Sidelines gives you the kind of insider knowledge most patients never get — not because their doctors don't care, but because the system rarely gives anyone enough time.

I write about what actually happens behind the curtain of healthcare, and how patients can walk into appointments, diagnoses, and decisions with more clarity, confidence, and control.

Written by a surgeon who also became a patient. Free, every week.
